Dear Other students,
I have reason to fear that in my lifetime I will see World War 3. I have come to terms with this, my friends and family have not
I don't fear death, but fear for my friends and family. I fear for the generations after mine. They'll look back on the 2000s and see irrecoverable stability. The 2020s are repeating the 1920s. Members of my family have moved to different countries they expect 'won't get the brunt of it'. All of this is done around me and I am powerless to stop it as nothing but a student who cannot make ends meet.
I have seen a friend's wife die by suicide, ashamed of being a white woman from the US. A friend who is of Hispanic descent and lives in the US has gone radio silent for weeks, fearing that he may be picked up by the immigration gestapo. A friend of mine in Australia who relied on HIV medication from USAID can no longer afford his treatment and is expected to have his condition progress to full AIDS and lowered life expectancy of 35 by 2027.
I see the militarization of our police in Europe, the escalations back to Cold War defense spending. My only hope is I live long enough to tell whomever remains to remember that we as a world saw this coming and did absolutely nothing to stop it. We learned NOTHING from the Cold War and have disregarded the progress since 1945.
